My History

I was born in Portland, Oregon, but have spent half of my life in San Diego (my father is a San Diego native and my grandmother still lives here, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to share my life here with her...she is a frequent visitor to all of our Project nights.) I grew up hiking, skiing, snowboarding, and attending a school with a philosophy and practice much like that of our beloved SDCCS!

I have a passion for service and advocacy for all individuals, and I have worked extensively to write grants and implement programs for univeristy level students to develop cultural competency through community service learning.

During the completion of my preliminary multiple subject teaching credential through the University of San Diego, I had the opportunity to become involved in the development of a new charter school (Trillium Charter School) in my hometown of Portland, Oregon. There I worked to develop the K-1-2 full inclusion multiage program as a teacher, creating a three year cyclical curriculum based on interdisciplinary thematic instruction, exploration, and independent learning. My experience allowed me to embrace the benefits of the charter school model, exploring the endless possibilities for academic freedom and ability to support the whole child, and engage in the challenging and dynamic process of developing a program and a school.

In the fall of 2004, I returned to the University of San Diego to complete my Master’s degree in Special Education with a dual emphasis in mild/moderate and moderate/severe disabilities. I hold a Multiple Subjects Clear Credential with a CLAD endorsement, a certificate in Developmentally Appropriate Practices from UCSD, as well as my Special Education Credential with an additional endorsement for teaching students with severe disabilities.

For the past six years, I have worked at the University of San Diego, in the capacities of academic coordinator, program developer, and instructor in the Summer Transition Program which supports incoming college freshmen.

I have loved traveling the world, studying history and culture, and having the opportunity to bring those experiences to the classroom. I love writing, reading, art, and most of all, spending my life with, and learning from children. A student in my class last year asked me, "Kate, when did you know that the thing you were meant to do in the world was teach kids?" I paused...and he continued..."Is it when you found out that you loved it so much when we learned something new, and that you loved spending time with us?" The answer, of course, was, "Yes."

I am honored to be a part of the dynamic and caring community of the San Diego Cooperative School.

My Journey to SDCCS

I was born and raised right here in beautiful San Diego, California. I grew up in the Paradise Hills neighborhood in the south bay with two sisters and my loving parents. I attended San Diego Unified School District’s finest; Penn Elementary, Bell Jr. High and Morse High School. I thoroughly enjoyed being a “San Diego Kid”, playing soccer and baseball, riding bikes, skateboarding, visiting the beach, attending Padres and Charger games and listening to music (all of which I still enjoy).

I loved San Diego so much that I decided to stay in town for college and attended the University of San Diego. There, I met many fascinating people and took the long route, considering several majors including music, physics and sociology until finally discovering education. My undergraduate and credential classes were more than adequate, but upon graduation, I found myself for the first time in my life truly yearning to learn and explore more about my future career as a teacher. I was especially interested in neurology research, pedagogy and social cognition theories, so I immediately enrolled in a master’s program at USD while concurrently substituting in various districts in San Diego. Those two years of teaching in different classrooms everyday and learning about educational theory formed a passion for bridging theory and practice in my own career.

After finishing the master’s program I knew that I needed to find a teaching contract, and continue on my way.  I found myself two and half hours away in Pasadena, California teaching kindergarten at Linda Vista Elementary.

In my search to find a way back home I starting checking out charter schools in San Diego and I saw the website for the San Diego Cooperative Charter School. Seeing how perfectly it matched my own teaching philosophy, I immediately wrote a letter and knew I had to do whatever it took to get my foot in the door and here I am.

I love being a teacher at SDCCS and I am humbled each and everyday to work with such kind, innovative and dedicated teachers. I’m proud to serve our wonderfully supportive families and I’m honored to guide their children in discovering and exploring the world around them. Here, I’m given the support and encouragement to continue my own professional inquiries including the relationship between families and school, Discourse Theory and child development, social and cultural linguistics and how to open a juice box without spilling.

I have  awesome group of friends and family who keep me smiling and inspired. I enjoy reading (all types of books and poetry), running, live music and watching tragically bad TV. I’m also pretty big into sports and enjoy season tickets to Padre games as well as play in a weekend soccer league. I’m a very fortunate person and feel obliged to give as much as I’ve been given.
